Why You Should Store Legal Herb in Air Tight Jars

In 2019 in the United States, 48.2 million people used marijuana.

If you're also trying to use a legal herb, then you will need to keep it in a special place where it won't go bad. Air tight jars are the perfect solution.

Keep reading to learn more about all the dos and don'ts of storing legal herbs.

Why Should You Use Air Tight Jars?

One of the best ways to keep legal herb fresh is by using air-tight jars. Many of the packagings that the herb comes in are sophisticated and designed to help preserve freshness.

However, the packaging isn't always perfect. Using disposable containers can also have cons to using as well.

Instead, when you get your legal herb, take it out of the packaging and put it in an air-tight jar. This will help prevent it from drying out and decaying. Mason jars are a great affordable option, and they also come in all kinds of sizes to store them as well.

The glass will seal out any moisture or air better than plastic will. It also won't affect the taste or smell of the herb the way that metal might.

Plastic containers aren't a great option either because this can make the buds sweat the moisture, which will dry them out faster. Instead, get a glass jar that has a complete seal.

However, once you have your herb in the right mason jar, you'll need to figure out where to store it as well.

Keep It At the Right Temperature

While the jar will help regulate the temperature, you need to store the jar in the right spot. If you don't pick the right temperature, your buds could dry out or taste bad, which will ruin the experience.

If you store them at a temperature that is too cold, then the cannabinoid and terpene contents will go bad as well. For best results, you should store your legal herb below 74 degrees. If it's above that, then mold and mildew can thrive.

You should try to keep it somewhere between 55 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit, with 65 degrees being the ideal temperature.

Don't Use Too Big of a Jar

Make sure that you pick the right-sized jars as well. Having an airtight container will prevent oxidation of the chemical profile. But if you use a jar that's too large, then the space in the air in the jar will create oxidation anyways.

You should use all kinds of different-sized jars depending on how much legal herb you're storing. Keep the jar at least two-thirds full at all times so that there's not too much air inside of it. Keep in mind that you don't want the buds to be crushed either.

Make Sure It's Not Too Humid

While the temperature is important, humidity also plays a crucial role in ensuring your legal herb stays fresh. This will help prevent any mold or mildew from growing on your buds.

If you want to maintain the quality of the herb, keep the relative humidity somewhere between 59 and 63%. Mold will start to grow when humidity is above 65%.

However, the trichomes in the herb will get brittle if your humidity is below 55% because it will be too dry in the air.

Don't Put it in the Fridge

While it might seem like a good idea to keep your herb fresh, putting it in the refrigerator or freezer can make it worse.

The freezing temperatures and increased humidity will make your bud brittle, and it could break. The trichomes will also break off, which means that your herb won't be as favorable or potent. It'll also be less effective when used as a medication.

Keep It In a Safe Place

Even if you don't own any pets or have any kids, there's always a chance that someone could visit your house and end up getting into the air-tight jars.

You should always store your jars somewhere that is out of reach and safe. You might want to consider putting it in a locked cabinet so that no one but you can access it.

Reduce Exposure to Light

Putting it in a cabinet is a great idea because you need to minimize the amount of light that the ber is exposed to.

One study done by the University of London found that when the herb is exposed to light, it can degrade much faster. However, if you store it in the right conditions away from all of the light, it could potentially last for up to two years.

If you can't store your jar in a dark environment, cover up the container with tape or something else that can block out the light. There are also jars that you can buy that are designed with UV protection to ensure that light doesn't get inside.

When you have too many UV rays shining on your herbs, this will make the bud taste worse and ruin the potency over time.
